Growing Pains

News and Updates from the Safety/Quality Assurance Committee

Final revisions have been completed to the KPETS Therapy Dog Workshop form which is used to train and assess prospective teams. The new form will also be used for teams who are being re-assessed at their three-year anniversary of membership. The new form is available for review on the KPETS forum click here.

The committee has also been working on a handbook for current members in leadership roles. Our goal is to help grow KPETS by providing mentorship and training of volunteers who want to explore, or take the steps needed to become an evaluator trainee, on-site evaluator, KPETS workshop assistant, KPETS workshop leader, or KPETS Orientation presenter. The handbook should be completed by the end of the year. Watch for updates regarding its release.

Finally, for those members who are currently performing visits in an AAT setting, please contact Jenny or Karen in the office to let them know the locations where you visit. For those who are interested in starting new AAT visits, you should notify the KPETS office. Prior approval must be given. Decisions to allow a team to go off-leash during an AAT visit will be made by receiving a recommendation from a current KPETS member and/or checking with the representative of the facility where the visits will take place.

We appreciate all that each of you do to share your pets with the public, and promote pet therapy in your community.

Donna Gomer Chair KPETS Safety/Quality Assurance Committee

Help Wanted

As per Donna's article above, KPETS is looking for dedicated conscientious volunteers to help screen and evaluate new volunteers at workshops and for on-site visits.

Your commitment to KPETS in this area would help us ensure new qualified teams will continue to help us fulfill our visit requests that come in so frequently.

Contact Jenny at Konnections@kpets.org and we will help you get started in the training/mentoring process.

Wish List

Printer update:

We have had a few response to our plea for help for our printer and internet sponsorship opportunities.

We are even being creative to make this easier for others to help out. Would you consider pledging to sponsor of $75 for ONE month each year to cover one of our consistent expenses?

All we would need is 24 people to pledge $75 for a specific month each year to be applied to these essential costs of KPETS services.

We will recognize you on our website with a sponsor list showing all our generous friends.

This does not have to be just you. You could ask family members or co-workers or business people you know who may be willing to support KPETS and our services.

Please spread the word.
You or they can contact me with any questions!

Ummm, maybe we could do this for our rent too!

IMPORTANT NEWS

KPETS preaches for us to be aware of our dog's actions at all times while visiting.

Not a bad practice for ALL the time.

Here are a few . . .

R.E.A.D. Workshop - by Bill Townsend

The Reading Educational Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.) workshop this past weekend  (10/8) in Oxford was a success! Attending were five KPETS handlers, Diana Murray, Robin Langerhans, Penny Lawthorne, Kate Black and Helen Hurilla, three TDInc teams from Reading, and one Delta team from West Chester.

One of the pointers I picked up was: Do you know the ingredients in the dog treats you might use on a visit? A lot of the treats have peanuts as an ingredient, and some people are allergic to peanuts/nuts!!! A kiss from your pooch could cause a allergic reaction! Please check the ingredients!

The instructor was great and Helene Skopeck was a special treat! I found out that she and her dog were honored at the anniversary of 9/11. She and her dog were among the teams that participated on 9/11 as a Therapy Team! Her pictures and description of her experience were exceptional. What an honor to have her at the workshop!

Helene also has agreed to come to AZ to give the workshop to the KPETS teams there!!!!!

Years of visiting and still going strong!

KPETS has been serving at Manor Church in Mountville for several years now. Congregation volunteers give parents of special needs kids a break so they can run errands, have quiet time, or do whatever they need to do on this one Saturday afternoon a month.

It started quite a few years back before Podley passed; he had been a regular there each month. Kate Cox has visited there with her newfie, Bo since the very beginning. She has been gracious enough to take on the coordination of this schedule, even though she had to retire Bo this year.

Their group would gladly welcome more teams to join them. The kids and volunteers LOVE visiting with the dogs. If you'd be interested, please let Jenny know and she will connect you with Kate.

The group meets every second Saturday of the month at 1 pm. (except for December and March).

Kate sends: "Special thanks to my regulars for taking the time on your busy Saturdays, to come for a short visit. They don't stop talking about you after you leave :) "

Udate from last issue

Remember last issue from Kelly Erb about the Billy, the lab? He was helping the young man with radiation treatments when Kelly took her father for his session. Kelly has an update on both. Click here for previous story

Kelly: "I just spoke with this man's family  yesterday.  They had requested that I take a  photo of Billy and their son so that he could have it with him to remind him of the "fan" during his treatments."

Proof again, that pet therapy works EVEN WHEN THE DOG IS NO LONGER PRESENT!  AND . . .

Kelly: "Also, my three boys and I spent the night at my parents' home one night during my father's battle with lung cancer this summer while my Mom (Bonnie Anderson/Bree) and her dogs were away.  Billy had never been to their home, but he came along for the night.  Billy ALWAYS sleeps with us. My father decided to stay downstairs in his chair vs. attempting the steps in his weakened state. Billy never left his side ALL NIGHT!  These creatures are unbelievable how they can sense our needs!  Nothing we could ever train them to do."

Truly Billy is a very precious gift from above:)

Where does the money go?

Volunteer sets KPETS up on Guidestar!

As you know KPETS is a non-profit, struggling with finances. That's because there is no fee for the services we provide, but those services do not come without a cost to the organizaiton. There are expenses involved in running our organization.  So our existence is dependent upon donations and fundraisers. Some ask, where does the money go?

Jackie Diffenderffer, a volunteer for KPETS has worked hard and now completed the process of getting KPETS' financial info uploaded onto Guidestar, a reputable information service specializing in U.S. nonprofit companies. Now you can view our financial records on-line at www.guidestar.org. Just search for KPETS to see details about our status.

Holiday Ideas

Something for someone who has everything!

We all know them, someone you want to remember at Christmas but have no idea of what to get them. Have we got some great ideas for you!

The past three years KPETS has been in the Lancaster Gifts That Give Hope program. But since we have participated three consecutive years, we cannot be represented there this year. HOWEVER, we will be at the York Alternate Gift Fair on Friday, Dec 2 from 5 -8:30. See above.

But if you can't make that, we can offer the similar ideas to you directly.

KPETS is offering the following alternate gifts. Why not give the gift of touching live/warming hearts!

A gift of $20 - Touching Lives/Waming Hearts by sponsoring the match of a new 'friend' with a registered KPETS therapy team.

A gift of $50 - Touching Lives/Warming Hearts by providing a new KPETS therapy team through training to enable them to visit 100's of new 'friends' in the coming year.

A gift of $75 - Touching Lives/Warming Hearts by preparing a qualified registered KPETS therapy team to do presentations in our local communites about pet therapy, dog safety or just good old-fashioned fun!

Your special gift, made in their honor will be acknowledged by a special card sent directly to them, and an acknowlegment letter sent to you.

Also, KPETS does have  In Honor of or In Memory of Donation cards available all year round.

Another gift idea is a KPETS Kalendar!

We hope some of these ideas will help make your holiday shopping easier!
