Coming Soon!

In my spare time, I'll be   creating a new web page for all our special needs therapy dogs.

The page will be called Pod's Pals!

So if you have a special needs dog (three legged, blind or special in any way) let me know. We'll post a pic and short bio on the page to inspire others with their "I can do anything" attitudes.

Thanks!

All dogs must be on leash when not swimming

I've done this the past two years and it's a fun time! Hope to see you there!

BwBBB6th Annual Bow Wow BIngo

The biggest fundraiser for KPETS is  Bow Wow Brown Bag Bingo

and this year was no different. Sunday, Sept 4

at Outdoor World's Circle M Campground, Millersville was the place to be for food, fun and a howling good time for all.

The Bingo Bags were HUGE and all the seats
were filled with "happy campers"! The silent auction and raffle prizes were incredible. I think there was more there this year than ever!

But this event could not have been the success it was without all the help from you guys in setting up, decorating, cooking and  staffing the various stations that evening.

The event raised over $7000 for KPETS. That's nearly ten percent of our annual budget - in ONE night!

Our ring-leader, Adella Houck was the best emcee as usual - getting audience participation, epecially when Amos had to shake them bingo balls!

Thanks to the set up and station crews and the folks who brought their four legged friends to make the evening even more special:

Adella Houck, Wendy McKelvy, Jenny & Joey Rule, Kate Bellone, Tami Snyder, Renie Titus, Nancy Bouder, Mary, Marilyn Hapke, Debbie Jackson, Nancy Houston, Diane Rima, Susan Bonekemper, Nancy Young, Karen Gerth, Fran Holt, Tank Holt, Linda Cullen, Sherri Adamson, Amos & Trish Hess, Barbara & Chad Noll, Cindy Reinhart, Janelle Senft, Terry McGarry, Becki Martin, Wendi & Abby Mitzel, Wendy Caldwell.

I'm so sorry if I missed anyone, Please know everyone's efforts are so greatly appreciated! Thank you all!

If you look at our Kalendar, there is so much going on, I can't keep up with writing about the events AND posting them. I need your help. If you attend an event or have a heart-warming pet therapy story, please send them to blogger@kpets.org. We'll post them on the KPETSTails blog and add a link to them in the newsletter too.

Here are a few . . .

New Title for KPETS' Dog(s) - by Laura Whitman

Bill Townsend added the AKC Patches to his dog's KPETS vest.

KPETS dog, Reni Whitman (cared for by Laura) completed the process to have the title of AKC Therapy dog (ThD) added to her "credentials". For a small fee, any dog registered with the AKC can have this title added after meeting simple criteria. The criteria is being registered with a Therapy group recognized by the AKC (which KPETS is), and having fify documented visiting hours. Www.akc.org has the forms needed for the documented visits and answers any questions you may have.

Congratulations, Reni and Laura - and to all the others KPETS' dogs who have completed the process! Bill Townsend and Zoey, Jolene Newcomer and Gio and quite a few others!

Vote for Taj!! -
by Heather Wadlinger

Hi Central PA dog lovers! "Taj" and I were selected as 1 of 15 finalists in the Beneful Dream Dog Park Contest. If we win, they will build a $500,000 dog park in the greater Harrisburg area! If you have a spare second to vote for us, we'd appreciate it! (You can vote 1x/day until 9/8/11). The dog park would be a great way to give back to our dogs that give us so much joy! Thanks! New Idea for Therapy Dogs - by Mary Gottfried

Karen Sagun, Director of Student Wellness at Elizabethtown College, is starting a program to deal with students' homesickness. She thinks having a therapy dog present at sessions would help students relax. She contacted me to see if Murray and I could help- so I've agreed.

This is another activity that doesn't require alot of walking for Murray, like the reading program we started at the Etown Library this summer. I know Murray will love visting with the college kids again (now that Paul has retired Murray doesn't get to attend classes anymore!)

Just wanted to let you know about Kpets involvement in another new program in Elizabethtown.

What a great idea! This works for the old pups but possibly for the younger or more active doggies who don't really enjoy the elderly scene. I'm sure the students in other colleges would enjoy ANY pooch!

Saying Good-bye to Argus - by Susan Hetrick

I just wanted to let you know that my beloved Argus (Chesapeake Bay Retriever) passed over the Rainbow Bridge on June 20, 2011 at the age of 14 years 1 month. Due to Argus's advanced age and because we moved to New Bloomfield, we stopped our visits to Messiah Village and various library reading programs in late 2010. Argus really enjoyed visiting with the residents on the Alzheimer's unit at Messiah Village. Initially we visited with another team but when that team moved to New Hampshire then it was just the two of us. We visited twice a month. We also made visits to Country Meadows in Mechanicsburg for a period of time. We did library reading programs for Bosler and Fredrickenson Libraries.

Argus was a "gentle giant" and everyone loved him. One of our favorite visits to Messiah Village was when we took along a CD so we could show the residents how Argus competed in DockDogs. They all really enjoyed that visit! Currently I have a three-year old Chesapeake but, alas, he really doesn't have the personality to visit nursing homes - at least not at this age. His name is Coleman and he has earned his Canine Good Citizen but I believe he would find standing and being petted just a little hard to handle. I'm disappointed because I really wanted him to follow in Argus's footsteps.

Best wishes to everyone at KPETS for continued success in helping through your animals. It is so very much appreciated and does so much to brighten the days of people who can no longer have a pet.

Thank you Susan, for all your dedication with  Argus. Your visits together will be sorely missed by so many. Coleman (what a great name) may come around. Maybe not in nursing homes right now, but possibly doing some AAT type work with a more active demand on him! Hope to meet him someday soon!

Konnecting Teams and Requests!

The demand for teams is great!

With the summer winding down and vacations coming to a close, we are getting tons of visit requests to fulfill. The Forum will have those requests listed and how and who to contact to set up those visit. Please check them out as there are quite a few new ones listed.

Check them out here - If you cannot view them, let us know and we'll check that you have been set up. NOTE: WE must set each user up, since we were bombarded with spammers. Every registered volunteer should be set up.

But we need your help in cleaning up those requests that have already been fulfilled. To do this, either post a reply directly on the FORUM so others can see the status,  or notify Jenny directly.

Therapy Walk with Patients and Pups!

On Wednesday, September 28 at 10 am, KPETS teams are invited to join in a therapy walk with the residents of Camp Hill Golden Living Center. What a great motivator to get the residents out for a walk with our furry friends. Please contact Jenny if you can join in on this therapeutic walk. Thanks!
